But wait! Before you go running down to the local store and purchase gallons upon gallons of vegetable oil and go pouring into your car think twice because it doesn't work quite that simple. Vegetable oil is thicker than standard oil or gasoline so it must be mixed or diluted with something so that is flows through properly.

The atomization process causes engine reliability which results in combustion and can lead to engine failure which does several things such as ends up costing you hundreds of dollars to fix the engine or a new car due to the ruining of an engine.

There have been a few different methods tried to fix this problem. Some have made use of vegetable oil by diluting by mixing it with diesel fuel or kerosene. There are companies which will gladly sell and organic solvent to those who plan on running diesel engine on vegetable oil. This solvent is designed to decrease the viscosity of the vegetable oil and allow for more complete atomization.

The widely used method is by changing the two tank system or modifying it to make it better with one tank containing vegetable oil and the other diesel fuel. These kind of systems use a pre-heating system and 3 valves to start the engine with the diesel then allowing the exchanger to get the vegetable oil to the right temperature so that it mixes well and runs properly.

The new engines are made to be able to use vegetable oil and a single tank which uses fuel injectors, glow plugs and other engine modifications to provide for vegetable oil burning. Special made pre-heaters bring the vegetable oil to the right temperature before it goes into the fuel system. These new single tank systems work on the on and go system and stop automatically when it is cold.

So the answer to the question is that yes vegetable oil is an alternative to fossil fuel. With today's new technologies it is becoming possible to run your diesel engine flawlessly on vegetable oil without the problems with the older systems. As well as fueling your car more economically it will also save you money in the long run and be better on your car than diesel fuel or gasoline. Don't you want to be able to keep your car as long as possible?
